Just Like Strange Rain – Video 8 – B-Side Album “Empty Sky”

15 11 2009

Elton_John_1968Vlog post number 8!  Today’s track is another B-Side to an early Elton John recording.  Just Like Strange Rain first appeared as the B-Side to Elton’s third single, It’s Me That You Need.  Another of Elton’s early singles that would receive decent critical acclaim but little radio success.

The song lyrically is once again an obscure imaginative piece so common of Bernie’s early work.  Just Like Strange Rain could be classified as psychedelic with its vast use of colors and obscure words.  Honestly, I have no clue what this song is about except that it provides imagery, and I suppose that may have been Bernie’s intent.

Musically this song doesn’t have much psychedelic flair and sounds more like an up-tempo pop-song.  The use of guitar at the start and Hammond organ throughout lends itself somewhat to the psychedelic genre, but the heart of the song is really just another “Elton John hymn meets pop song.”  Personally I’ve never had much attachment to this song, and that may come across in my playing.  I think my lack of attachment made this a difficult song to cover.  It is the most up-tempo song I’ve done thus far on the blog, but I feel my playing lacks emotion.  None-the-less, please try to enjoy my rendition of Just Like Strange Rain.  Tomorrow I promise to be back in full form with “It’s Me That You Need,” one of my most favorite of the early Elton John catalogue.

I looked up from my glass into the sky
There’s no room in my comic book to hide
Calendar swung on the wall held by a rusty nail
Down came the strange rain and washed my thoughts away

So stop in the sky and tell me why
You’re changing your colours before my eyes
Yellow, blue, green and grey
Settled on the window pane

So stop in the sky and tell me why
You’re changing your colours before my eyes
Yellow, blue, green and grey
Settled on the window pane

It made the rain that came seem strange
Just like strange rain
It made the rain that came seem strange
Just like strange rain

Still I sit beside the fire and watched as it fell
Come in colours from above into my citadel
My eyes are all embriodered with the rainbow you have made
And now it seems as though it’s just, just like strange rain
